Colonoscopy:  This procedure allows the gastroenterologist to perform a visual examination of the entire colon.  This procedure is performed under sedation and patients are asleep during the examination.

 

 

                        Screening – Investigation/examination of the colon for evidence of cancer or pre-cancerous lesions.  This examination is performed on patients 50 years and older once every ten years or if necessary more frequently; and on patients who are at higher risk for colorectal cancer.

 

                        Diagnostic – This procedure is accomplished to identify specific causes of symptoms being experienced by the patient.  Some examples are bleeding, pain, and change in bowel habits.

 

                        Therapeutic -- Once a problem or potential problem has been identified, the therapeutic colonoscopy is used to take corrective action.  An example of this type procedure is the removal of colon polyps.

 

Esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD):  Visual examination of the esophagus, stomach, and duodenum using an endoscope.  Patients receive a sedative and sleep during the procedure.

 

 

                        Screening – Used to visually examine the esophagus, stomach, and duodenum for the identification of cancer in high risk patients.

 

                        Diagnostic --   When patients experience stomach pain, have difficulty swallowing, vomit blood or have frequent heartburn or reflux, this procedure is done to discover causes.

 

                         Therapeutic -- This EGD is undertaken to perform corrective action for immediate symptoms.  These procedures are used to remove objects (meat, etc) lodged in the throat, stop bleeding,  treat ulcers, and to insert a feeding tube.

 

Endoscopicretrogradecholangiopancreotography (ERCP):  This procedure is used to identify causes of severe abdominal pain coming from the gall bladder or pancreas.  It is also used to remove or mitigate obstructions in the common bile duct or pancreatic duct.

 

PillCam Endoscopy:  Basically, this is a miniature camera enclosed in a pill that the patient swallows.  It begins taking two pictures every second to make a photographic examination of the small intestine.  It is a wonderful, painless, tool for diagnosing Crohn’s Disease and other small bowel ailments
